Saint Aidan's - how it all began...

Picture
New Parks was the first post-war housing estate to be built in Leicester, the first four homes being occupied in 1946. The area was orriginally in the Parish of Saint Augustines and served by its Priests. In 1947, a Sunday School was started, which met in the White House School with Church services also being held there.

In 1947, the first service (a Harvest Festival) was held in the local Community Centre.

In 1950, the Rev'd Donald MacLeod was appointed as Curate-in-Charge of the new Conventional District of Saint Aidan, and very soon plans were underway for the building of a Vicarage and a dual purpose Church/Hall.

The first turf was cut in 1954 (after the Bishop had blessed the site from the roof of the flats on Aikman Avenue) and the Hall was dedicated by Bishop Williams for use as a place of worship on 2nd April 1955.
